About the Art
Bharatanatyam is one of India’s oldest dance styles. Since ancient times, it has been nourished in the temples and courts of southern India. Later, in the nineteenth century, it was defined and documented as a performing art by four brothers known as the Tanjore Quartet, whose musical compositions for the dance still comprise the majority of the Bharatanatyam repertory today. Bharatanatyam is thought to have originated in the Natya Shastra, an ancient book on the performing arts published around 2000 years ago. Students at study this art form with zeal, adhering to its purest form.
